Once upon a time… my Dad took my Mom on a date to the Gallery – and he wanted to smuggle his foxterrier in to see the pictures. I can’t remember which exhibition it was, but it seems that taking my dog everywhere stems from my Father. He would be so glad to see that there are dog-friendly galleries and museums nowadays.
Szimpla Háztáji – the younger brother of the well-known cult establishment
Szimpla Háztáji is just across the street from Szimpla, the well-known ruin pub in Kazinczy utca. Háztáji is more like a café, it serves cakes and sandwiches, coffee and tea, and from time to time hosts photo exhibitions. We were invited to the opening event of the current exhibition, but couldn’t make it, so I really wanted to see, how Boglárka Balogh, whose photos are published in National Geographic, captured the faces of endangered animals. The effect is shocking. After looking these amazing creatures straight in the eyes, you will think twice about buying that chocolate with palm oil in it or leaving your textile shopping totes at home.

Robert Capa Center of Contemporary Photography
Only a couple of weeks ago have I finished reading Robert Capa’s memoir of his WWII assignment and adventures. His dry humour is really entertaining, sometimes even lulls you into believing that taking war photos in the front line is nothing but fun.
He said, that “if your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough” – well, he was definitely close enough. The exhibition puts in a timeline his war photos from the Spanish Civil War, WWII, China and Vietnam, but also the shots he’d taken at the birth of the State of Israel and in post-WWII Budapest.
